What is the Drupal Community Summit?

It's the community behind the open source Drupal Content Management project that really sets it apart.  Thousands of developers around the world take part in building Drupal, and building the web with Drupal. This post peers behind the scenes at what makes the community tick.

Community.  We talk about it a lot in the Drupal world. But what does it really mean, and how does it work?  Six months ago I joined the PreviousNext team as the Community Engagement Director.  This incorporates the volunteer work I was already doing in the community as a board member of the Drupal Association, and chair of the Community Working Group.  Internally, I also work with the team to fine tune our collective contribution and participation in the project.  Some of my colleagues here at PreviousNext need no guidance whatsover, so from them I'm learning new ways to participate every day.  Others are new to the Drupal universe and looking to find their own ways to make a useful contribution. The truth is, there's so much to do, it can be hard to know where to start.

One place to get involved, and get across the range of issues the community faces is at the Community Summit.

The Community Summit was a new initiative which took place for the first time in Prague last year at DrupalCon. It happened again in Austin earlier this year, and the next instalment of this thrilling story takes place in Amsterdam next week.

The Community Summit grew out of the old Community track that was a regular fixture at DrupalCon.  It's like a contribution sprint for community issues.  During the summit in Austin, the Drupalize.me team recorded interviews with participants to help other people understand what it's all about, and how it works. Check it out.
